Sustainable Sourcing

Made from orchard pruning waste β€” adding income for fruit farmers, not cutting forests.

Place of Origin

Bac Giang Garden Charcoal

Bac Giang is a Vietnamese province with vast lychee and longan orchards. Each year after harvest, farmers prune old and crowded branches to rejuvenate the trees and lift next year's yields. Those prunings β€” once a waste stream β€” become the raw material for Ecoloka charcoal.

Lychee and longan wood is dense and naturally fragrant. It produces high heat, low smoke, and a subtle, sweet aroma that elevates grilled dishes. Turning orchard byproducts into premium charcoal also generates additional income for farming households, beyond the short fruit-harvest season.

Two grades of fruitwood charcoal

Both products are made from the same orchard wood, in traditional kilns. The grade depends on burn time and the level of carbonization.

Traditional Kiln

Black Charcoal

Manually fired with less precise temperature control. Easy to ignite, ideal for everyday grilling and high-volume kitchens.

  • Moisture8 – 15%
  • Ash5 – 10%
  • Fixed carbon60 – 70%
  • Volatile matter25 – 35%
  • Calorific value~6,000 – 7,000 kcal/kg

Practical characteristics

  • Uneven quality (some pieces over- or under-burned)
  • Easy to ignite, but burns faster
  • Produces some smoke and a noticeable wood smell
  • May contain uncarbonized pieces (not fully carbonized)
Upgraded Earth Kiln

White Charcoal

Not standard Japanese binchotan, but an upgraded version from earth kilns β€” more thoroughly carbonized than black charcoal.

  • Moisture3 – 7%
  • Ash2 – 5%
  • Fixed carbon75 – 85%
  • Volatile matter10 – 20%
  • Calorific value~7,000 – 7,800 kcal/kg

Practical characteristics

  • More thoroughly carbonized than black charcoal β€” but not premium grade
  • Less smoke, though still present at a low level
  • Relatively long burning time
  • Gray-white outer surface (due to natural ash coating)

How Ecoloka charcoal is made

Harvest & Pruning

After fruit season, lychee and longan branches are pruned to rejuvenate the trees and become our raw material.

Sorting & Drying

Logs are sorted by diameter and air-dried to reach the right moisture level for kiln firing.

Traditional Firing

Wood is carbonized in earthen kilns β€” a slow process that locks in heat density and aroma.

Cooling & Packing

Finished charcoal is cooled, hand-graded, and packed in bulk bags or retail packaging for export.
